Referral
Process:
Making
Referrals for Paediatric Assessment where there are Child
Protection Concerns
Whenever a child
presents at a GP consultation with any indicators of child
maltreatment requiring paediatric assessment the GP
must make a referral to children's social
care and not send the child directly to A&E (unless the
injury or condition of the child is life threatening) or straight
to the on-call paediatrician for an assessment without involving
social care.
It is crucial for
all GPs to follow the SET procedures when making referrals for
paediatric assessment where there are child protection
concerns.
Please note
the SET procedures state:-
-
Except in cases where emergency
treatment is needed, Children's Social Care and the CAIU are
responsible for ensuring that any medical examinations required as
part of enquiries are initiated. (Page 78)

For further guidance
regarding making a referral to Social Care (page 80) and Paediatric
Assessments (from page 147) please see the SET procedures
which can be accessed at www.essexcc.gov.uk/escb or www.southend.gov.uk/lscb or just google in 'SET procedures' and the link
will come up.
