Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder / Attention Deficit Disorder
A chronic, pervasive disorder of behaviour and learning; characterised by developmentally inappropriate degrees of inattention and impulsiveness, with or without hyperactivity.
Prevalence in school-age children: UK 0.1%, USA 3-5%
DSM-IV diagnostic criteria - see Wikipedia article
Gordon (see Ox Text for reference) gives 6 'Guideposts' to ADHD diagnosis:
1. Impulsivity
2. Severity
3. Onset before 7 years of age
4. Pervasiveness (e.g. symptoms present at home and at school)
5. Chronicity (symptoms present for at least 6/12)
6. Intentionality (unless comorbid with oppositional-defiant disorder or conduct disorder' child exhibits remorse about behaviour and cannot control it without extreme effort )
Other conditions affecting attention and learning include: situational stress, family discord/dysfunction, depression, anxiety, medication, drug misuse, physical illness.
